State of New York
Richmond County
January 3, 1807

Historical letter written by the Republican Committee of Richmond County to President Thomas Jefferson respectfully requesting him to accept the nomination of President for a third term. A great read, and check out the list of signatures following this!

Of course, Jefferson did not run for a third term, as Washington set precedence for 2 terms; it was in respect for him that no one would serve longer as President. That tradition lasted until FDR, who had been elected for 4 terms. After his death, a 2-term limit was imposed.

[On this letter is the signature of William B. Gifford, owner of the Rose and Crown Tavern in New Dorp]
